[Tags|]

A reminder that there will be a combination WHITE FLAMES (by yrs trly) and SUCCUBUS IN THE CITY (by Nina Harper, aka Shariann Lewitt) book party and reading this coming Friday at [info]pandemonium_bks!

Friday, May 16th
7pm -9pm
Pandemonium
4 Pleasant St., Central Square, Cambridge

Books will be sold, autographed and read from.

Should we have cake? I was thinking of bringing a cake. Except I won't have a car and bringing one on the T might be kind of a challenge. If I order a cake, would someone volunteer to pick it up and bring it? I'll bring plates and forks... *ponders*

My Tablesetting Fetish [May. 11th, 2008|08:11 pm]

ceciliatan
I do not get to indulge it often, but I have something of a fetish for proper table setting. That means that, yes, I learn a new napkin fold pretty much each time I host a dinner party of larger than 6 people, and that I covet someday being able to have something other than the plentiful but plain stainless steel flatware I bought at Target.

Fortunately, this fetish of mine fits well with corwin's love of buying housewares, so now at least we have all the proper wine & drink glasses (red, white, champagne, cocktails, etc...) and he's never complained about my continual search for machine-washable but beautiful table cloths and table runners.

What follows is some picspam of the Easter Dinner table I actually bothered to take pictures of. Ironically, this is one of the table designs I've done where I did not use any of the fancy runners I brought from Hong Kong or have accumulated over the years.

It being Easter and Spring and all that, I wanted something with color, so I used our dark blue tablecloths on the bottom and then folded the lavender one into runner-width and used that. I then used the napkins that matched that one. I used the "candlestick" fold here, as it's supposed to look like candles standing up in the wine glasses, but most people assumed that, it being Easter, they were bunny ears. All art being open to interpretation... I'm fine with that.

I miss you Mom. [May. 11th, 2008|12:05 pm]

[mood | thankful]

Mom,

Mother's Day is just beginning
and I'm just  a little blue
as I sit here sipping coffee
remembering Mother's days with you.

Memory lets me see so clearly
visions of our  yesterdays.
I am who I am because
your love always showed the way.

Often friends will pose the question
"Why do you do what you do?"
I pray that my life does justice
to the woman that was you.

Happy Nurses Week! [May. 10th, 2008|01:52 pm]

[Tags|, ]

I forgot to post this on Tuesday.

Tuesday May 6th was Nurse's Day and the start of National Nurses Week that ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

I want to again thank all the Nurse's, CNA, HHA, and everyone else at Trump Pavilion of Jamaica Hospital for the care that that gave my Brenda while she was there in 2005 and for the comfort you gave me after her passing.

I also want to wish all the Nurse's, CNA, HHA, etc. out there that take care of someone. I do know how it can be a hard job.

As I did last year and every year since I lost my Brenda, I sent each floor that she was on and to the general staff flowers as a special thank you.

A new coffee house????? [May. 9th, 2008|03:21 pm]

vicscatnip1

I got a call from source unknown
to go to an address.
"I'm told that you like Starbucks BOLD.
Now go and try the best."

I've always loved a mystery
so I thought that I would go
to the address the caller gave
and try this foreign joe.

I tried the coffee at this place.
the joe was stale and cold.
Next time they should not quickly throw.
the gauntlet at my BOLD.

Motorcycle for Sale: Honda Shadow 1985 -- $600 as is [May. 9th, 2008|03:53 pm]

ceciliatan
Here's what I just put up on Craig's List:

The time has come for me to sell my beloved Honda Shadow. I'm just not riding it anymore and my backyard is not a great place to keep it. The bike has under 5000 miles on it, NOT KIDDING.

Bike runs but needs work -- needs new battery (this one works with jumpstart) and a tune up, plus cosmetic stuff. Weather has taken a toll, but I never rode it much and so it has really low miles.

It's a Honda and Hondas from that era just run forever, like HP laser printers.

* Facts: 1985 Honda Shadow VT500c
* V-twin engine
* shaft drive (not chain drive)
* cherry metallic red gas tank and trim
* includes original toolkit and spark plug puller!
* very easy bike to work on and maintain
* cruiser style, comfy seat
* 5' 4" shrimp like me puts both feet on ground easily
* great women's bike

More details including the story of riding to John Preston's funeral )

A protest march that worked [May. 8th, 2008|10:10 am]

susan_wright
I was driving out of Manhattan yesterday after picking up 2 sick foster cats from PetCo at Union Square. Yes, that's how I spend too much of my time. About two blocks from the Midtown Tunnel, I heard on the radio that people were protesting last month's verdict on the shooting of Sean Bell (the unarmed black man who was shot by three police officers, of which two of them were black). The protesters had just blocked the onramp to the Queensborough Bridge, shutting down traffic. As I crossed 2nd Avenue on 36th Street, I saw a dozen police officers standing there staring south.

Down 2nd Ave, a block away, a crowd of people were marching towards me. It looked like at least a hundred people spilling off the sidewalk into the avenue. They were carrying white signs without the sticks, because that's illegal in NYC. I zipped into the tunnel just as they were arriving to shut down traffic behind me coming in from 36th Street.

I have to say my first feeling was relief. I really didn't want to get blocked from getting out of Manhattan during rush hour. I had to get these cats to the vet, go pick up my thyroid prescription, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure the drivers who got blocked behind me felt the same way – "Why inconvenience me? I had nothing to do with the Sean Bell verdict."

But as I drove home, I realized it was a really smart move. How many protests have I attended that got NO attention whatsoever from the media or officials? I remember the huge peace march near the United Nations that Kel and I went to prior to the US invasion of Iraq. There were at least 100,000 people. Block after block of 1st Avenue was filled with protesters and late arrivals were being routed up to the 60's to get onto 1st Ave. But we were orderly and didn't block cross streets or the bridges and tunnels.

Afterwards I had to search to find the briefest mention of the enormous protest. Only local rags in NYC carried it. And the number of people was grossly underestimated by the media and police. CNN showed a few stragglers, completely misrepresenting the scope of the march. It sucked in every way possible that our message was blocked by those in power.

But I woke up this morning and found that under a thousand protesters had done such a good job in shutting down the rush-hour commute that it's a top news story today. Al Sharpton got arrested. I'm not a big fan of his, but whoever thought up this idea for a protest – a peaceful pray-in at the onramps of bridges and tunnels – is brilliant in my book.

What do you want to bet that the people who were blocked from leaving Manhattan don't feel the same?

Advisory Board Nominations Begin

This morning we are opening the nomination process for the user-representative positions on the LiveJournal Advisory Board. A full description of the process can be found here.

To get you started, here are the basic things you should know:

- You may only nominate yourself
- Each nominee will need 100 motions of support in order to be eligible to be a candidate
- We ask that you keep your comments on the nomination posts to "I support this nomination" or something to that effect; be kind to those who will need to count the "supports", please.
- Although the nominations and election poll will take place in [info]lj_election_en, you do not need to watch the community in order to keep up with the election; we'll announce everything here as well.

Everyone here at LiveJournal is looking forward to this first-ever User-Representative election! We'd like to thank everyone who is participating. Some words from our current Advisory Board members:

danah boyd: “LiveJournal is filled with very passionate users. These users have helped shaped LJ's various communities over the last decade and it gives me great joy that LJ is recognizing and incorporating users' voices into the decision-making processes. Having user representatives from different parts of LJ on the Advisory Board will help make sure that the company is meeting the needs of its diverse constituents.”

Esther Dyson: "I'm sure we'll learn a lot from the process, and later on from the two users selected as well. Especially, I hope that the discussions before the voting will be more meaningful and more focused on policy than those in some offline campaigns."

Brad Fitzpatrick: "It's cool that SUP is getting users involved with the LiveJournal decision-making process. I look forward to seeing who the community elects and the results of our efforts working together."

Professor Lawrence Lessig: “The user elections will provide a critical check on LJ's process of maintaining a valuable and trustworthy environment for the LJ community. The mandate of the elections will give the user representatives pride of place among the members of the Advisory Board. Each of us will look to them to guide us in our judgment about how best to make LJ the community we all aspire that it will be. I look forward to welcoming the user representatives, and learning a great deal from them.”

[info]chasethestars has also made some banners for you to use, if you'd like to show your support for the candidate of your choice!

A Public Apology [May. 4th, 2008|02:25 pm]

This is a public apology to someone who's LJ I read but they do not read mine, but people she knows do read mine. [I did post this to her LJ]. I hope she reads and accepts this.

-------------------------------------------------------------
"R",

I want to say that I am sorry that what I said made you fell uncomfortable.
Yes, we have known each other for over 12 years [including the years you where out west and we had no contact at all] and yes I know that you have NEVER expressed any interest in me in any way execpt maybe as a friend [and ONLY as a friend] and please understand that yes I do accept and know that nothing beyond that is ever going to happend between us.

I see now that my "flirtation" did go way overboard and I am truely sorry that it did. I would like to chalk it up to the fact that It was late and I have not been sleep well as of late, but I do not want to use that for a valid excuse because when you make a FRIEND feel uncomfortable there
truely is no EXCUSE.

In the future, I will be more carefull what I say and again I am sorry.

Reminder for those coming to the book party at my house tonight:

-There are cats. Medicate appropriately.

-If you didnt RSVP, you can still show up, of course!

-House is not child-proofed. At all. Knives on low shelves, all that. And we WILL be talking about sex and porn. (Because we always do.)

I will set up the laptop as a "blogging station" so people can blog about the party for those who are only there in spirit. :-P

====================================

Holocaust Remembrance Day - May 2,

Please wait 20 Seconds before you close this e-mail.

This message asks you to do one small act to remember the six million (6,000,000) Jewish lives that were lost during the Holocaust. Send this message to everyone you know who is Jewish.

If we reach the goal of reaching six million e-mail names before May 2, we will fulfill and give back to G-d what He gave to us: 6 million Jews who are alive today who remember those who perished.

Please send this message and Ask them to also forward it to others.

Thank you.
